Our
History
Glad Tidings Assembly of God began in the hearts of Pastor and Mrs. Ralph Hilton. The first meeting was held at Randolph Park (now Reid Park) on Sunday, November 7, 1965. There were thirteen people present.
The following Sunday they moved into a store building on East Speedway, where they worshipped for four years.
In August 1969, they purchased the present property and began to build in February 1970.
While the first building was being built they held services for six months at Brings Mortuary (on Broadway) on Sundays and on Wednesday evenings they held services at Pastor & Barbara Hilton's home, filling the living room with the congregation.
They moved into their new facilities in June 1970.
In October 1971, they started the second phase of the building program, which is the present auditorium. They dedicated the new auditorium, which had a seating capacity of 500, in October 1972.
In October 1996 Pastor Ralph announced his retirement as the Senior Pastor of Glad Tidings - leaving behind a wonderful legacy of faithfulness, love, and changed lives. In January 1997, Steve Hilton was elected as the new senior pastor.
God has blessed GTAG with tremendous help in leadership over the years through the associates, music ministers, deacons, teachers, and workers.
Looking
Ahead...
The congregation of GTAG past have left a legacy of missions work in their giving and going. We have gone to Africa, Alaska, Arizona, Bahamas, China, Cuacao, Holland, Israel, Jamaica, Louisiana, Mexico, Peru and Puerto Rico through M.A.P.S., A.I.M. & other missions trips. We have given to BGMC, Coins for Kids, LFTL, Money for Missions, STL, and to the support of sixty plus other missionaries and outreaches.
Our missions giving and going today is as strong as it was 50 years ago when Glad Tidings began. We continue to carry on the legacy of missions giving and going to our community through our Christmas Lights Production (which has been a symbol of our church since 1988), our Giving Service, Easter productions, community Halloween Outreach, and other outreach opportunities.
The legacy that was started 50 years ago will live on through the Glad Tidings of today and tomorrow - until our mission here is interrupted by the return of Christ...And that's when the celebration will really begin!
Philippians 3:12-14 (NLT)
"12 I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. 13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it,[d] but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us."
